Community Festival and Grand Opening of 9th Born Learning Trail

Aera Energy Brings New Interactive Trail to Smothermon Park to Promote Early Childhood Development – an Initiative part of United Way of Kern County

Arvin, CA. – Smothermon Park provides plenty of green grassy areas for picnics, large trees and a play structure for children in the Arvin community — but now, the park is home to a new interactive learning trail, made possible by a donation from Aera Energy and its partnership with United Way of Kern County. A Community Festival and Grand Opening is scheduled for Thursday, June 20 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The entire community is invited to attend. Children will walk the interactive trail and receive a book to take home. Additionally, 30+ vendors will be participating to provide free resources, games and activities and food to the families.

Aera and United Way volunteers rolled up their sleeves to dig, paint and install the 9th Born Learning Trail at the park located at 800 Walnut Drive in Arvin, in support of early childhood education. The trail provides interactive learning activities specifically for young children between the ages of 0 and 5, and their parents or caregivers. The research-based activities along the learning trail are designed to boost children’s language and literacy skills, prepare them for success in school and life, and encourage them to get active.

“At Aera Energy, we are truly passionate about enriching the minds of our future generations,” said Janea’ Benton, Aera public affairs coordinator in the Wasco area. “Not only are we very passionate about supporting early learning and education at Aera Energy, our employees are proud to have a hand in building something so special in a community where many of our employees, and our vendors are raising their own young children. We understand that children, can really benefit from education in the first five years of their lives, and are thrilled to be able to provide a learning trail that can provide a fun and enriching learning experience for them.”

There are 10 bilingual signs on the Born Learning Trails, which provide guidance about educational activities for parents or caregivers to try with their young children outdoors, or at home. The signs provide information about several child-led activities such as hopscotch, and games that encourage the identification of shapes, letters and colors.

“Research tells us children are literally ‘born learning’,” said Rachel Hoetker, Education Manager of United Way of Kern County. “We know what happens in a child’s early years matters — for success in life and for school readiness. And we want to help parents, grandparents and caregivers use everyday outings — including trips to Smothermon Park — to support that learning.”

More than 750 Born Learning Trails have been installed at parks, schools and in communities throughout the United States. In Kern County, this is the 9th trail installed – an initiative of United Way of Kern County.

The Community Festival will consist of Food, Games, Activities, music and more.

Hotdogs will be given out while supplies last
