8th Annual A Chocolate Affair

March 26 @ 4:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us, March 26th for our 8th Annual A Chocolate Affair at Luigis Restaurant, 725 E 19th Street, Bakersfield CA, 93305 starting at 6:00pm. Our A Chocolate focuses on our wonderful Education Program. United Way of Kern County understands that the foundation for the ability to read begins at birth or even before. Listening to and interacting with parents/caregivers are the first steps to success. The steps continue through preschool and up to the third grade. This is because it is at this time that children make the important transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Those who are unable to read proficiently by the third or fourth grade are at a much higher risk of failing and ultimately dropping out of school. Programs such as the Born Learning© Initiative, 10 station, bilingual circuit course with learning activities at each station in parks around Kern County, and the Raising a Reader Program, a preschool classroom for five years where children are exposed to 100 different titles, have guest readers, and special events are a key component in our efforts to improve education. In addition, we also have our Book of the Month Club which provides over 700 children ages 0-8 with brand new, age-appropriate books, as well as our home libraries that supply families with 20 age-appropriate books to grow their love of reading. Through all these programs, we were able to distribute over 23,000 books last year, and with your help we hope to grow our programs as well as increase our services to the community.
