DID YOU KNOW…
You can help people in your community who need assistance with their tax
returns?
You’ll get FREE TRAINING and the satisfaction that comes from using your
knowledge to help other people.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
You have a number of choices. Volunteering depends on what you’d like to
do, your skills and knowledge. You can serve as:
-
A Screener
-
A Quality Reviewer
-
An Interpreter
-
A Tax Preparer
-
An Office Assistant
WHAT IS THE TRAINING?
Instruction and materials are FREE.
The training consists of 40 hours of IRS approved process-based
training, which includes tax law and how to prepare a tax return using
the tax software.
The training is taught by experienced VITA Coordinators and returning
volunteers.
Training is generally one or two nights per week for approximately eight
weeks and is offered from mid-October until January.
VITA Sites generally open for business the third week in January.
HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED?
We know your time is valuable.
You will be required to complete all of the training and take the test.
After the test, the time you decide to volunteer is totally up
to you. We do ask that you commit at least 40 hours over the course of
the tax season. Days and hours vary from office to office, so you can
pick your schedule.
AS A VOLUNTEER YOU WILL HELP:
There is nothing more satisfying or rewarding than volunteering your
time to help others. So, come volunteer and help individuals and
families claim all the tax benefits they have earned, including the
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
WHAT IS EITC?
EITC is a special tax benefit for working people who earn low or
moderate incomes. It has several important purposes: to reduce the tax
burden on these workers, to supplement wages, and to provide a work
incentive.
Millions of dollars in EITC refunds go unclaimed in Kern County every
year. You can help put this money back in the pockets of Kern County
workers.
